Misdemeanors

Misdemeanor Defense Lawyer in St. Petersburg

Highly Experienced Defense in Pinellas County

Being arrested for a misdemeanor is not something to take lightly. While these charges are less severe than felonies, a conviction can still have lasting consequences, such as jail time, fines, a permanent criminal record, and restrictions on employment or other life opportunities. If you are facing a misdemeanor charge, having an experienced defense attorney is essential to protect your rights and guide you through the legal process.

My name is Joseph Montrone, and I have been practicing criminal law in Florida for over 29 years. I started my career as a prosecutor in Pinellas County and now focus on defending people charged with crimes, including misdemeanors, in and around St. Petersburg. No matter the circumstances of the arrest, I treat every case with the seriousness and attention it deserves.

What Is a Misdemeanor in Florida?

A Florida misdemeanor is a criminal offense punishable by up to one year in county jail, fines, probation, or community service.

Misdemeanors are typically divided into two categories:

  • First-degree misdemeanors – Punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000
  • Second-degree misdemeanors – Carry a maximum sentence of 60 days in jail and a fine of up to $500

While the penalties may seem minor, a conviction, even for a second-degree misdemeanor, can follow you for years, affecting your reputation and future opportunities. Legal representation is vital, even for “low-level” charges.
