An important objective in the handling of any offense allegedly committed by a juvenile is to keep the case in juvenile court whenever possible. While the juvenile justice system still emphasizes treatment and rehabilitation as core goals, the adult courts tend to focus more on punishment and deterrence. In order to prevent exaggerated penalties, I work hard to oppose certification of your child as an adult whenever the facts offer an opportunity to do so.
I represent juveniles charged with a full spectrum of felonies, misdemeanors and status offenses, including:
- Assault, fighting or weapons offenses
- Property crimes ranging from criminal mischief or shoplifting to burglary or auto theft
- Sex crimes, including unlawful consensual sex between minors and statutory rape
- Drug crimes, especially those involving possession of marijuana or prescription painkillers
- Underage drinking, minor in possession, or juvenile DUI charges
- Truancy, curfew violations or other status offenses
A big part of my job as a juvenile defense lawyer is to give the prosecution, the courts and the probation officers solid legal and factual reasons for working with your child and your family to find alternatives to extended detention like diversion programs, work release or community service.
Having spent most of my life and my entire career in the Tampa Bay Area, I have a thorough familiarity with the range of community-based programs and resources that could support a positive outcome in your case.
